Maiwen Dot Pheot
Age: 22 years old
Born: Dongola, Northern State, Sudan
Family Origin: Abvei, South Suday
Desired Major: International Relations or Economics
Maiwen Pheot Ngalueth was born in North Sudan, after his family fled their home in Abyei during the war (Abyei is a particularly volatile region of Sudan). Maiwen is currently studying in Khartoum. He hopes for a Banaa scholarship so that he can study international relations or economics. His goal is to address poverty and Sudanís huge wealth disparities, which he views as a root cause of conflict across Sudan.
"I believe that the unequal distribution of national resources revenues has been one of the reasons of peace absence in Sudan. This grew unsatisfactory feeling of marginalization among the inhabitants of the rural areas and drove them into using violence as a mean of protesting against the central governments in KhartoumÖ[An agricultural economy] will definitely help in building confidence between people and therefore result in growing mutual peace not only between the centre and margin, but also between all sections of the Sudanese community, and that is exactly what we mean by peaceable Sudan."
